Yes, finally we know who it was that appeared to save Jack from danger all those years ago, back in the day, when Sandra endured Professor Broadshoulders' final assault during the "Earthbroke" storyline. One of my many little mystery threads, finally resolved!

I'll bet that one was keeping you up at night. Well I apologize for the decade of insomnia, but it's all in service of a grand tapestry for you to enjoy. Now you better get some rest. You've earned it!

But what's this that Jack is talking about? Them being on the road had something to do with those inexplicable magic explosions...? Hmm. Guess that's another thread waiting to be unraveled. Quite a few of those, what with Zandra being gone for a few years. Will I ever let you get to the bottom of all these riddles? Looks like all we can do is wait and listen. Try to get some sleep in spite of it all.

Poor thing.

That is awesome! I always thought it was Dawn's (I had to go look up the name) ghost or someone related to that. Tomie's new form seemed a bit sudden and strange (happens when there's a several year jump), but now it's got a perfect tie- in some really old stuff.
Aaaand I just realized that the Magi-Net was perfectly named. Not a network, but an actual net. Good work Joe.

Oh Jack...the Lord loves to test fools who make oaths like that. You really should have learned that by now.

It was still an oath he needed to make.

Tomie would not have been one of my guesses to have saved Jack.

Although, Tomie's purpose is to be lost again at some point...

Heh, I called it on the last page.

I guess Thomie really fears the time she spent along in a dark. Now that she has a humanoid form, that fear might have been magnified.
Maybe she fears the form would be lost as well, if Jack lost her?

It reminds me a bit of Kon from Bleach. While usually more of a comic relief, his backstory was...dark and serious.

Tomie

Woweee! I reread that recently and it had been puzzling me! Now we all know! Awesome.
So, my next question on Tomie is, if she's a woman, and seemingly heterosexual, why did she want to get to know Jack's adult magazines full of sexy women?

Well, ask yourself this... if a guy's skin magazines were to be assigned a gender, do you think they would be inherently female, or male? They're filled with pictures of pretty ladies, but so are the brains of the average man.

Also, K raises a valid point. Tomie's experiencing pretty much everything in a new way, including gender identity. She's very flexible.

Very clever answer!
I had begun to think that, given that Tomie was, as she says here, "just a thing", she then had no human identity, neither male nor female. Rather, in an instinctive sort of way, the book confirms to the personality of the Wizard. So the desire to look at pron ladies was the influence of Jack. Now, she's a human female, and that changes things a bit. She has her own human identity instead of being a reflection of Jack.
I find myself assuming she was a Sumerian lady in antiquity whose soul was bound to the book. She then lost her human identity. But now she has managed to reclaim it somehow.
(Is my memory correct that the book was of Sumerian origin? Was it another ancient civilization?)

Please don't forget bisexuality is a thing! If Tomie has romantic feelings for Jack, it doesnt mean she cant like girls too. Anyway, wonderful update, Joe!

Just wanted to say, I've been following this comic a long time, and watching your art develop is intensely satisfying. I think you're one of the best artists working in comics today. And I love Tomie's design - the way she's a little bit heavy, the way her shoulders move. She's just lovely.

I sort of get a vibe she's asexual (but that might just be because she was a book and, as an ace myself, I'd like to see it reflected more in media ^^; ) and that her interest in girly mags is the same curiosity-driven interest she'd have in pretty much anything. Plus, if Jack likes them so much, that's just more reason to understand them.

All I know for sure is that their relationship is one of the sweetest things I've ever seen. Sex-driven as Jack is, it's still obvious that Tomie is the most important being in his life; and although she has her little insecurities, Tomie sees pretty at ease and understanding of that fact.
