Sam just likes to make conversation in an expository sort of way while he's fighting monsters. He's an actor, it's ingrained in him.
Dang the gloves WERE a Chekov's gun. And I didn't catch it. My hat's off to you sir. I usually see those coming.
Any good author/cartoonist has at least ONE "Gun" in play at any one given time. A good one will flaunt as many as 5 or more in front of you without you catching all of them.
Does this make Sam a high level Bard multiclassed into Monk now?
I suspect we're about to find out. There's a "Took a Level in Badass" moment (Not that he's not classing in Badass to begin with...)
Indeed, it is at that. Especially in Sam's case...
I remember the strip that talked about the gloves as a religious symbol, but I can't remember the details, and I can't find it!!
Someone out there, LINK US!
I believe this is the page you are looking for: http://www.zebragirl.thecomicseries.com/comics/663
Thank you, that was EXACTLY the strip!
I'd gotten it in my head that it was from early in the run, so I would have been hunting for a LONG time.
^.=.^
Ha! We got a cleric! Let's see him cast lay on hands :D
I see the vampire does have a wider vocabulary. You could almost begin to have a conversation.
Sam's not necessarily that devout. What we have here is a Slayer.
I'd pin him more as a Bard who recently multiclassed into Monk; either that or he's hardcore abusing Use Magic Device right now.
Step right up folks~! Im so hot, you'll be on fire with just one touch! Step right up, Step right up!
They've been monster hunting for a few years, funny it never came up before. Guess Vampires aren't that common... or active without Zandra's special sauce
Sam has been living a pretty normal life. Found a girl and settled down...
The only monster they hunted was Zandra (and the werewolves before that, but they aren't known to be weak to holy symbols). Nephasti probably don't have a strong reaction to holy symbols, or they're just stronger than his faith.
Nah, they have been doing stuff off camera, recall Sam and Jack's conversation on the phone, or when Betty meets Sam in his car and he mentions having met her kind before.
I suspect he normally goes into things with a bit more preparation and tries to avoid getting into fist fights with vampires.
Good to see Sam get some of his confidence back.
i think it's more a case of they WEREN"T as active...part of the plot of this comic is it's essentially set at the beginning of a new age of Magic. Sandra/Zandra and her town just happen to be a focal point. It's also worth noting that most of the vampires she's attracted are relative newbs.(all made within a span of time not exceeding a natural human lifespan)
"To bring joy is a wonderful thing... and now I'll bring more joy to the world by Getting... Rid... Of You."
Or something. He'll tear this guy a few new holes now, "For Mary."
First thing I thought on seeing the page: "Wow, that guy from last week was a prophet!"
Good job there.
"And the gloves are on for this match, folks..." 7@=Q
Personally, I'd say paladins don't always have to be devout. Sometimes the faith chooses you, instead of the other way around. Just have to be the right person, with the right mindset, and the right Holy Avenger Gloves +5.
DING! We have a winnah! Give that one a seegar!
So, just to make sure we are all on the same page, here. If I understand what is happening, this is like a vampire touching a cross or other religious symbol, or putting his hand in a bowl of Holy Water, yes? And to Sam, being from a Funny Animal Dimension, the Bugs Bunny or Mickey Mouse White Gloves are like a religious symbol - like wearing a tallit (prayer shawl). And so if the item was once worn by someone "devout" it might have some powerful mojo, even if the person currently wearing it isn't particularly a strong believer? In some story worlds, a symbol only works if the WEARER believes in it and in others, it only works if the VAMPIRE believes it is holy. But in others, the symbol can be imbued (in various ways) with stand-alone power of it's own, right? I think that is what is going on here?
Wearer generally has to believe, but if you have a holy/devout person, the relic in question can be Imbued with enough juice to get you to the "solidly believes" stage where they become damned near if not vorpal in nature. That was the epiphany you saw here. He semi-believed...and the gloves were imbued.1
Note also that they didn't actually do anything until Sam invoked his father. "Son of a--"
I am really absolutely totally certain that he was planning on finishing that sentence "--devout sort of guy!"
