Say... you don't suppose this is that "Southpaw" character that the vampires said they would send after our heroes, do you? Hmm.

Alright, a lot of you might like a helping hand here (God, there are so many "hand" puns lately), and I'll be nice and go ahead and spell it out for you because, really, the comic's getting long and this is DEEP in the archives.

"Berserk" was a member of Wally's original werewolf pack. When they rolled into town Sandra fought this guy and cut off one of his paws. He limped away at the end of that storyline and it was implied that the den mother Doyenne intended to kill him because the bunch of them were just such a disappointment, but his paw was later recovered by this poor young woman, and... well, look what happened. Go figure.

Yes, I've been waiting thirteen years to unveil this character. Because I play the long game, Mr. Castle. Don't get the reference? Well I'll let you suss that one out on your own.

Oh yeah, and hey! Happy Rabbit Day everyone!

That is indeed the long game. I wouldn't have known I'd you didn't spell it out because your styke changed so much I didn't recognize her. Is this the person who vamped Mike?

Ahh, cheers. I must have missed that. Or forgot it. Can't count on my brain for nothin'. Which is rather why links like those you've started putting in your afterword. I'm not sure if it would be more or less work than what you're currently doing, but you could run through and tag pages by which characters appear in them.

so that's why she said "dibs on the wolf" way back in that one page.

Side note, is there a specific reason why her hair is covering up one eye constantly or am i just reading to much into it?

side side note, I've said it before and i'll say it again, i love this comic. when i get home at eleven thirty at night after working in a hot kitchen all day, I only do one thing before i go to bed; check this comic for a new page. It's my favorite thing about Saturdays right now and if/when zebra girl comes to an end i'll be looking forward to the next endeavor.

Wow. I'd never have gotten this one if you hadn't spelled it out. And I have Zebra Girl comic strips as my randomly-changing wallpaper (along with other webcomics I love), so I'm constantly seeing the older stuff! (just yesterday I saw the strip where Jen was revealed to be in Australia and thought "Ah, that's right!").

I do love this mish-mash. But I take it that the character's line, "It's just berzerk", doesn't actually have anything to do with the name of the original werewolf character, right? Otherwise it'd have been "I'm just berzerk", or "I'm just Berzerk". So the name similarity might trigger a connection but, without further information, it's not a real causal connection, is it?

And you know the funny thing? I always thought of him as Tom, never as Berzerk. That's his name, after all! His "werewolf name" always just flew right by me!

Is there any special significance to the spelling of "berserk" / "Berzerk", by the way? Not that the characters would hear it, but "Berzerk" as a name, being used by this character as though it were a regular noun, would make a sort of connection, sure. UNless you always spell it "berserk".

Capital Letters would make this sort of thing easier to grasp, I guess. :) "It's just Berzerk". Has no influence on what the characters hear, but is maybe enough of a hint to the reader that this is an actual reference to something related to that paw which is now filling the panel.

Ah well. It's easy to talk - if I' so full of good ideas, I should go make my own webcomic, right? ;) Stellar work as usual!

Just a typo, actually! That seems to be going around lately. Thank you for drawing attention to it. It's fixed now.

Actually, now that you mention it, I do have letters in my font that are more capital than others. It's subtle, but they're slightly larger than the others. It's moot in this case, though, since here "Berserk" is spelled in "all caps" for emphasis.

If it's just Berzerk, does that mean he/she's trapped in a maze with killer aliens? Weird, but I don't see any...

Crystal's shirt says "Perv" (I would have said it was Jack's old shirt, except that it fits her too well). Wally's says "Pizza".

I find that a surreally delicious combination.

If you think the shirt is form fitting just go back a page and check out her pants. For...um... purely scientific reasons of course.

When Crystal first went goth, I think the shirt she wore was one of Jack's that Sandra had burned. It's been a few years since she had a ready supply of those, though, so maybe she's started getting her own Perv shirts and distressing them herself.

I choose to interpret "I'm a Frankenstein" as directly answering the implied question "What mind of monster are you?" Which would make her a Frankenstein's monster, and quell my rage against people who use that name for the monster itself.

end of message

18th Apr 2017, 12:37 PM

Mr. Casual

I found it helps to quell that rage if you adopt the commonly-held notion that the monster takes his "father's" name. So he is, in effect, a Frankenstein.

"I play the long game, Mr. Castle" is from the series finale of Castle, right? That was a pretty good series. The ongoing subplot mystery was starting to wear a bit, so it was nice to have that wrapped up.

No, it's a left paw, though I think I can see how it would be confusing. The thing is, it had shrunk back into a more wolf-like shape and the thumb had become a dewclaw, making it difficult to see. It's just not that well drawn, really.
