Wally's a very nice werewolf, but every werewolf gets in a mood from time to time. Comes with the territory.
Y'know, Vampires and werewolves are like cats and dogs, our imagination naturally tends to cast them into a yin and yang sort of relationship. In my case, I think that werewolves in the Zebra Girl cosmos operate by releasing an inner demon onto the outside world, while vampires feed their demons by sucking things inside. Sort of an explosion versus a vacuum.
Hey, that's good. I should put this in a book or something.
NOTE: I'd like to apologize if anyone made a comment that's been lost, I accidentally uploaded an extra copy of today's page some hours ago which had a comment section of its own. It's been deleted, so if you posted any thoughts that were excised then please, feel free to repeat them below. Or don't. I won't think any less of you either way.
Looks like Tom was expecting Wally to still be the Omega. He looks so surprised to see Wally be assertive and aggressive.
Tommy is still hung up on Doylene.
Meanwhile Wally has a real girlfriend and moved on.
Eh, in both cases they're hung up on people that have tormented them in the past. It's definitely about getting even.
True. Wally had really step up his game since leaving his old pack. Now, he's like the Alpha wolf!
RIP infinity pizza T-shirt, we hardly knew ye
Yeah Wally is a true Alpha now, unlike the alpha and omega structure that turns up in an imprisoned or artificial group like Doyenne's pack the Alpha is usually the Daddy of the pack.
Which raises the question of when Crystal's delivering her first litter...
Actually on none-werewolf maters, Crystall is the Alpha. That inludes Fashion.
Well there's an Alpha male and an Alpha female, also known as "Mom and Dad" which is why I brought up the litter
Oh, dear.
There is a common thread of thought that, when confronted with the image, the idea even, of the spectre of one who is both known to you, and known by you to be dead, that the shock of such is well nigh overwhelming, and instinctively leads to stunned, frozen or even petrified moments of rejection and indecision, as the mind struggles with the sheer impossibility presented before it.
This is a common thread, but no more forgivable in its inaccuracy for it.
True it is that the rational mind is often overwhelmed and struggles to comprehend the irrational being presented to it, and true it is that instinct takes over in its place; yet, while it may be truth in some cases and instances that the instinct to shrink and cower and hide is strong enough to break the mind, the matter is not so simple.
After all, when instinct is given the reins, it is now instinct which calls the shots for which reaction is appropriate. And when presented with the spectre of one with whom nothing is associated but shame, and fear, and grief, and pain, the appropriate instinct can be quite...
Brutal.
It seems dear Southpaw forgot an important lesson best remembered by those who beg, borrow and steal memories of others, especially the dead: one's own impressions, and one's own memories, are not the most accurate of records, and the memories of others are even less trustworthy.
On the positive end of things, the future looks to be brightening for dear Wally; after all, it is not every day you manage to find closure for buried trauma delivered right to your door.
When meeting someone who you remembered grinding under your heel a while ago, but who has been separate from you and in a better situation, beware the potential for them going for your throat.
Oh shiznits, Wally! Time to shine, you big burly beautiful brutal boy! Beat that bastard Berzerk back!
Tommy, one of the werewolves in Wally's pack, lost a paw in his fight against Sandra. Shortly afterwards, Mike and a friend of his were looking around the site of the that fight. His friend found the paw and, per last weeks comic, somehow got herself possessed by a werewolf ghost, and later was vampirized (or something like that).
I think someone linked a bunch of this stuff last week. Start here ( http://www.zebragirl.thecomicseries.com/comics/264/ ) to reread the whole werewolf arc.
I suppose mostly I have no idea why Wally is so angry all of a sudden. Although judging by Tommy's confused reaction maybe that's the intended effect.
ZB: Well, Wally really wasn't treated well by the rest of the pack, except perhaps Doyenne. Tommy was just expecting Wally to still be the meek Omega he could bully around.
If you're lost, you might review last week's news post. If you already did and it's something else that's confusing you, feel free to ask for clarification.
Wait... did the paw possess the girl? How did that happen? She wouldn't know of Doyenne otherwise, right??
I'm confused.
Somebody replied last week that apparently there is a mythological being out there that occurs when the ghost of a werewolf possesses someone who owns or has picked up a body part of that werewolf. The more you know.
I hope Doyenne makes a return appearance. Then Wally can go full-tilt on her. "Who's the Omega NOW!?"
I'd be more enthusiastic about rooting for Wally if I didn't have the knowledge that the one who will actually get hurt is the girl whose body is being possessed.
I think it's safe to say that the girl has long ago ceased to be, and her body is just a meat chassis for Berserker Tommy's spirit.
Plus, that meat chassis is a deadly werewolf/vampire assassin now, which needs to be stopped.
So, I wouldn't feel too bad about it.
Perhaps after disarming berzerk (in a similar fashion to what betty did) she will regain control of herself (and just be a dangerous confused vampire instead of a dangerous possessed vampire)
I didn't know just anyone could comment on these strips! Great work, Mr. England--you're a creative maven. I like your thoughts on vampires and werewolves this week in particular, but many many things from before now!
Yin and Yang? According to the old legends, dead werewolves became vampires.
But it was very common For witches And wizards to Become Vampires after death.
There is also the possibility of Qlippoth ("Shells of the dead"): in Qabbalistic tradition, demonic entities that use the likeness of dead loved ones... 7@=e
The difference in expression and reaction on panels 2 and 4 is a bit too extreme, especially considering that on the previous page there was no indication that it was going to go like this. "A girl haunted by a ghost" etc etc etc.
My guesses are usually wrong, but what the hey. :) I'm wondering whether those extreme differences mean Tom/Berzerk went berserk on panel 2 and took over... and whether by panel 4 we're looking at the girl/ghost/frankenstein thing minus Tom's input; he left the building.
Then again, I'm unsure whether the ghost is Tom/Berzerk or whether it's someone else entirely. I was assuming it was someone else up until, like, right now.
Funny thing, if I look at the speech balloons from this page and the last, it DOES imply that this is Tom speaking and that when the character first approached them it was someone else - but then, the "?!" balloon is ALSO formatted in the way that implies this is Tom. So I can't be right on all counts. :) The formatting started with the "It's just BERSERK" panel.
Ah, no, wait, I think I get the chronology.
Tom loses his paw to Sandra. Tom limps away, the paw is left behind. It is implied Tom will be killed later.
Girl finds paw in the woods.
Tom is killed. His ghost leaves his dead body, which is God knows where, and goes to haunt the part of his body which had been severed some time (years?) ago.
The girl gets haunted/possessed by Tom, in the processes absorbing the paw into her own body, and later gets vampirised.
That it?
Proud of ye Wally. Proud of ye boy.
Go get that louse.
Yeeeeeeah, faced with panel 3 Wally I think I'd be reconsidering the whole "intimidate the little brother for old time's sake" idea too.
The way I always heard/thought of it, vampires are death incarnate, while werewolves are unbridled life. Vampires feed on and devour life, acting like a plague or a bioweapon, being only as choosy or restrained as their self-preservation instincts. Werewolves are all passion and energy and frenzy and boiling blood, like a semi truck made of nature-in-your-face.
In which I do wonder, Is Crystall a were yet? I mean.. bodily fluids and such.
Or is she just laying low or afraid of using that power.
Well, come to think of it there are hints Crystal could be a werewolf. She brought uo smelling monsters earlier and she has an oversized (though not as big as Wally's) collar on. Seeing Wally change makes it clear these collars' size are not just as fashion choice alone.
Heh. Tommy never saw that one coming, the poor dumb bastard. Then again, he always was kind of a tool. (see what I did there?)
Always liked it when some jerkwad shitkicker from a protagonist's past shows up, tries to stir up shenanigans for the lulz, but then gets unpleasantly updated on just how many levels of badass his former victim took in the meantime.
Wally's got strength, confidence, and something to fight for, and had a potential for growth that his other packmates sorely lacked as they were worthless wastes of flesh who understood jack shit about being a werewolf save might makes right (and they were wrong about how that actually works too). There was a REASON he was Doyenne's favorite. Now Southpaw/Berserk is gonna get himself an education on what it REALLY means to be a werewolf, in a way even Doyenne couldn't teach him.
I'll fetch the popcorn.
Heh. "Tool." I'm glad someone remembered that little plot point.... Actually, now that you mention it, I might have to use that line.
So Tool WAS Berserk in this dimension? Am I reading that right?
Yes. If you look back on the Tool arc and the Werewolf arc, it's the same character, but from different dimensions.
Hang on. Are you saying that "Tom was Tool" in the same way that "Sam was Sandra" and "Crystal was Tawny"?
Because Sam recognised Berzerk as "Tom", and then said "small universe" or something. It seemed as though he had recognised Berzerk's counterpart in his dimension, therefore if there was already a Tom in that dimension it wouldn't be Tool.
Unless we take into account that Tool was *not* from that dimension. And that Tool and Tom lived (un)happily and oblivious of their connection in the Sam Sprinkles universe.
Huh. Nevermind.

"To embrace the boy named Tom".
Amazing the sort of little things you don't even notice at the time but which have a profound meaning years later. Happens a lot with this comic. I like it. :)
Mind you...
...Tool was definitely not from Sam's dimension.
...Tool was always known as "Tool" over there, where did Sam even hear the name Tom?
...Tool had been in hell once before and lost his soul (may or mayn't be related).
Following the current theories, Tool is either Tom or Tom's counterpart (possibly at different times and chronologies - heck, Tool could even be Tom in our future). But if Tool is Tom's counterpart, he comes from a third dimension - not ours and not Sam's.
You are assuming Doyenne's expressed view was the truth about the Werewolf condition.
Personally, I thought she was suffering from several insane delusions that were aged & compounded by her strange inability to communicate & mentor her chosen "children."
Doyenne was a monster not because she was a werewolf. She was a monster for what she does to her pack. She is a madwoman who turned people into werewolves, let them run rampant, while quietly judging them and growing to loath them, then murder them for failing to meet standards she never communicates with them. I doubt she ever explained her standards she needed sated to allow a pack-mate to survive.
Crystal seemed to luck out, possibly because the cleaver/quirky way Crystal probes the Alpha's thoughts & goals. Read the dreamy way she explains it to Crystal. She is always dully confused but Crystal's horror at her revealed thought process. Doyenne seems deeply comfortable with her old logic, and does not understand (nor terribly care to understand) that others would not be able to figure out this twisted ideology if it's not spelled out.
She is the monstrous mother that consumes her children.
As to her belief werewolves are wolves, and should not act human, well, that is a confusing mess in itself. Were does that begin & end? Should werewolves talk? Wear clothes? Drink tea? Hang lanterns in the trees? Turn into a human shape? A werewolf can do these things while a wolf obviously can not.
Why not just abandon a pack that fails her standards? I'm not familiar with Alpha wolves killing their packs. She scolded Berserk for being petty, then notes she will tell other supernaturals about Sandra & her family, obviously hopping said supernaturals would mess with them. So she's a deluded hypocrite too boot.
I personally suspect that her "self destructive phase" was brought on by a belief that she was a monster, or at least a human of thought first. Perhaps at some point she tried to embrace what she was, but went too far left field.
All the while she victimizes her chosen packs twice over. First she turns them, then sets them up to fail her strange standards before executing them. Standards I suspect are born out of her aged madness, with little consistency.
It's all these factors that make her a creepy & fascinating antagonist to me. (Assuming my reading is correct, of course.)
Yeah, I saw her as the worst of the pack. I suppose it's easy to forget, since she was more dignified in her cruelty.
Wally is going to get ALL the belly rubs after this~!
^..^
Interesting. Who wants to bet that Wally will hurt someone that doesn't deserve it somewhere in the next... let's say... 3 comics.
Not only did Berzerk treat Wally in a bad way all the time back then, he also threatens his new pack now - aside announcing to kill Wally. Only valid option is to curbstomp that idiot.
Honestly the other tom was way more scary. I'm not sure whether this one has a chance. Wait a minute it looked like the other one was uniting with his soul in hell and as far as we know the multiverse seems to have one hell. Does that mean the different versions of him could meet in hell?
Aww, there goes the pizza t-shirt.
I feel like he has to stock up on graphic tees, he probably blows through them like crazy.
He probably doesn't get to wolf out on a whim in everyday, non magic-spooky-town-commando-mission situations all that often.
I'd expect him to make some good ol' shirtless time for himself when he needs to.
Aaaaand here we see that Tommy is unfamiliar with the concept of "vetting a target". When you bring it, make sure you're the biggest bad-ass in the fight. Otherwise, you walk right into a mauling and if you survive, you look like a laughingstock from then on.
So, Southpaw is a girl possessed by Tommy's ghost, if Wally kills her/current host, will Tommy float out and posses someone else? Or are matters of possession more complicated?
Cool, Wally finally has a personal stake in this. seems everyone has a rival or enemy in this chapter.
I'm so eager to see what happens next I keep typing "Wally" into the address bar. This, of course, does nothing to help. I blame my migraine.
I finally pinned down what Wally reminds me of on this page!
Snoopy. Not sure why. I think it's the angle and the roundness of his nose, it reminds me of that dance that snoopy does with his nose in the air.
Anyways, that was kind of random. I like snoopy though, so there is that.
